food, my only friend in dc

okay, so when when ryan was here we tried to go to this place called baily's. we assumed it was some pub/irish/bar/grill/sports place that served you baily's with every meal. well we go and walk to the door but inside looks like some sort of waiting room. there were stairs in the far corner, an elevator, and a ton of people just standing around. we didn't see a hostess taking names or any type of hint as to what we were supposed to do. so we turned and went off to eat elsewhere. decided to try try again tonight. this time the waiting room was completely empty. up the stairs i walk into the restaurant up top and it is basically a million of those tall tables like you'd see at applebees. each was full of people eating and chatting, but not a server or hostess in sight. on top of that, when i got up there most of the crowd all turned to look at me at the same time. kind of awkward. so after pretending to look as if i was waiting for someone/looking for someone, down the stairs i went out of this most unusual establishment. i really don't know what to make of it at all.

so i've now passed 4 or 5 restaurants and for all of them i am pretty under dressed. i'm wearing shorts, flip flops and my usual button-up. i'm gonna need pants for all of these. the only ones i can do are chilis or chipotle. and although i love both, i'm gonna try new places and i'm gonna review on here. would you expect anything less from me?

tonight when i got off work and..wait. it was this morning on the way to work. there was a total overcast which was rad to see because its been total sun each day. and when i got off, the overcast was still there but everything just looked so grey out and with the sun you could almost look directly at it because it was covered by the haze just right. still walking around. been like 20 minutes of walking. here is mcdonalds and subway. k, i'm literally 2 minutes from the door to my apartment. going up to change. just picture me writing this as i walk through all this and what a loser i am. finally at my restaurant. place is called jaleo. josé andrés is the chef and they are a pretty traditional spanish type place. nice inside. authentic chefs and servers. got shrimp with red pepper stew which was great. bread was good. they brought out this really weird bowel of mini pickles i think. food was good though. took a little long for my refill. meal took like 5 seconds to make. now just waiting for dessert. menu doesn't have a lot for the average folk. too much clutter of spanish on the menu. my dessert was out of this world. too hard to describe and like i said, the menu is in spanish, so you'll just have to go. my server is a tad slow.

weird stand-up coaster. last roller coaster, i promise. Posted by Picasa

more stupid scenery pics, but this one is like an optical illusion because it looks like the tower isn't a tower at all. everything looks miniature. Posted by Picasa

we now return to your regularly scheduled program

i don't think this writing is doing much justice with how busy my life is over here. i've never had a time in life where i have more things going in and out my head a million miles an hour.

sean penn: actor was in new orleans to try to rescue hurricane victims - cnn.
sean penn: actor is retarded - me.

run: 15 min, 6.2 speed, 1.54 miles.
bike: 17:43 min, 5.52 miles, 89 rpm.

ah man, jared got a big ass package in the mail and i didn't get shit. and i'm finally gonna start this blog crap and quit screwing around! here i go.

this gets depressing reading these letters [from constituents in utah]. i have a ton here from what sounds to be old people asking the senator to not have their medicaid cut.

sitting in a committee room waiting for a meeting to begin that i'm in. first off, i'm the only person here except for the speaker and i think her boss. it is extremely awkward. meeting is on the risks associated with children and what this organization does with them.

the whole hurricane thing is crazy. the us doesn't seem that great at all. and you should see the people that work here. they seriously know everything about everything. especially mike l., who is my lc (legislative correspondent).

oh yeah! saw john kerry in line today at the cafeteria. he even looked at me. it was scary and exhilarating all at once. rode in the capitol subway with another senator and rode a "members only" elevator (meaning not me) with a bitchy house member. its surreal being surrounded by all of this.

run: 15:00 min, 6.4 speed, 1.58 miles
ride: 22 min, 5.04 miles, 93 rpm

bill frist is on larry king promoting himself with how he helped care for the sick. there will be more political banter on here because my life is now the news. i pretty much need to know everything about everything. i thought i was pretty up to speed on current events before this, but that was tip of the iceberg stuff. and i wish this was an exaggeration. [turns out that i'll end up speaking very little politics. i get it all freaking day long so to take up even more time immersed in it would drive me nuts. plus, i figure i don't want this to turn into just another political blog. instead, i'll leave it as just another useless one.]

this sounds like a mean thing to say, or racist even, but living here is the first time seeing lots of rich african americans. nothing meant by it.

decided that i'll keep exercising each night with no weights or machines for one month. i'll see how i'm doing then, then decide if i need to start more exercising.

my mate is talking about his girl who is hindu and has read the book of mormon, but has lots of doubts. everyone (we are having a cookie/hearts/game cube party at our place as we speak) is all concerned about her and their relationship since she is not mormon. all i wanted to know is if she is a hot chick or not.

as hard as i try i can't seem to remember how to get everywhere. i still get totally lost underground and at the senate office buildings. went through the capitol the last two days and [end of writing].

Day 6: Being the tourist

I think the appeal of attending a city you’ve never been in is seeing everything for the first time; a tourist mind you. I don’t know many people who research the city they are going to so well that they pretend that they’ve lived their for years. This was the case with Ethan. Yes, I may have appeared as a tourist, but that feeling was ruined by Ethan telling me where every building was, what road to take (directions once again) and how to act while I’m there. The funny thing is, he looked more like the tourist than me. Probably still does. A mormon in D.C. with a camera taking picture of absolutely everything; the flowers, the trees, and probably even certain meals he’s eaten because they remind him of the girl back home…. Ready to go home. Ok trip. E makes me look like mother Theresa.

[despite the rather negative tone in ryan's trip summary, he and i both know it was awesome. i complained about him, he complained about me, but i don't think we'd have it any other way. we drove, i'd estimate about 1,900 miles, through nine states and one district, and ate more food than any two guys should. some of you out there are also complaining that i need to get the blog up to date. quit your crying because i'm working on it. as it is i spend too much of my time devoted to this thing, day and night. for now, pretend like it is up to date. you won't even know the difference. now that i'm done with ryan's babble i can get to my own. nyc next year anyone?]
